Northern Lakes Cooperative – Since 1932

Northern Lakes Cooperative is a business owned by its member owners, created to provide benefits to the people who use its services rather than outside investors. What makes a co-op different? Member owners help guide the business, the focus stays on member needs, and profits are shared with member owners. Whether you live in Hayward or are visiting because you love the Northwoods, we truly appreciate your support of your local cooperative. Thank you!

Northern Lakes Cooperative was founded in 1932 by 60 farmers who were frustrated with high fuel prices from large petroleum companies. During the 1930s, the co-op expanded by adding fuel outlets in nearby communities, along with groceries, farm supplies, and a grain elevator.
In 1969, the Co-op Board of Directors and management led the construction of the first shopping mall in Northwest Wisconsin. The mall included a supermarket, variety store, clothing store, barbershop, beauty salon, and credit union.

Throughout its history, Northern Lakes Cooperative has been known for progress, innovation, and service in the Hayward area. While much has changed over the years, the co-op’s values have remained the same: excellent customer service, growth for its patrons, and a strong commitment to the community.
